Mulled wine, also known as spiced wine, is a hot or warm alcoholic beverage made with red wine, various mulling spices, and sometimes raisins. It’s said to have originated during the Roman Empire and had a slightly different name back then. It was Conditum Paradoxum and was made from boiled red wine and other spices, much different to spices used today. Over the years its been adopted by many countries and changed in small ways. Mainly to incorporate the spices that are in season and available in that country at the time.Â
It was once considered a year round beverage but in the UK, we consider it mainly a Christmas drink. It’s thought that this became tradition in the UK during Victorian times. It was seen as a posh Christmas drink. With the spices meant to bring warmth and good feeling, it was felt that this is exactly what we were meant to feel during the festive time of the year.
There are also non-alcoholic variations of this drink. In Polish Christmas markets, where mulled wine is commonly used as a mixer, vodka-spiked mulled wine can be found. It’s usually found at Christmas markets and winter events such as ice skating and ski resorts.
So Gluhwein is a German word, it translates to “hot spiced wine”. That’s exactly what mulled wine is, a hot spiced wine. This means they are essentially the same drink. However, they may taste different in a different country. From what we said earlier, the drink originated from the Romans. This has been altered over the years based on spices in each country. So arriving in Germany, Poland, or any other European country, may just give you a slightly different tasting wine.Â
There are probably 100s of different recipes that have been used over the years. As long as the wine is spiced, it’s done correctly. There is no wrong or right way to do it. Much the same way the Spanish treat the sangria, everyone can have their own twist on it and that will vary across the globe.
